Laurie Berkner has been involved with music since she was a child, and it’s only fitting that now, at 40, Berkner is involved in children’s music again.
Though she was born in France, she was raised in Princeton, N.J., where she was active in musical theater, choirs and bands. She followed her passion for music to Rutgers University where she was able to tour Europe as an orchestral guitar player and choir soloist.
In 1992, Berkner began performing as a professional rock musician in a cover band called Lois Lane. Later, in an original band called Red Onion, Berkner found it difficult to write songs, a problem that disappeared when she began writing children’s songs.
Five years later, she and Susie Lampert, Brian Mueller and Adam Bernstein, released a cassette-only album called “Whaddya Think of That?” Berkner had enough faith in their talent and ability to continue with children’s music that she formed an independent record company—Two Tomatoes Records— in 1998.
Since then, she has released another four albums, two videos and three books. She also tours occasionally. Laurie Berkner Band tickets are now available for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. shows at Count Basie Theater on March 13 in Red Bank, N.J.
